Why video is harder than a photo
A photo swap has to look right once. A video swap has to look right thirty times a second, and stay consistent between those frames.
The naive approach treats a video as a stack of images and swaps each one independently. Each individual frame may look fine, but the model makes slightly different choices every time — a fractionally different jaw edge, a marginally different skin tone. Played back at speed, those tiny differences become visible as a crawling, shimmering face. This is temporal flicker, and it is the single clearest sign of a low-effort video swapper.
Fixing it requires the renderer to consider neighbouring frames rather than each one in isolation, so that the identity, edge placement, and colour stay stable through motion. That is what temporal smoothing does, and it is why a good video swap takes meaningfully longer than the same number of individual photo swaps.
What affects your result
Head angle range
Clips where the subject stays roughly front-facing swap cleanly. Full profile turns are the hardest case, because there is little of the source face left to map onto.
Motion blur
Fast movement in low light smears facial detail, and the model can only work with what is in the frame. Steady, well-lit footage swaps better.
Occlusion
Hands, hair, microphones, and glasses crossing the face mid-clip create the frames most likely to break. Prefer footage with a clear view.
Resolution
A face that occupies a large part of the frame gives the model more detail to work with than one filmed from across a room.
Rendering time and credits
Video is priced and timed by length, because the work scales with frame count. A few seconds of footage is a few hundred frames; a minute is well over a thousand. Two practical consequences:
- Trim before you swap. If you only need four seconds for a post, do not render forty.
- Test on a short cut first. Run a brief section to check the source face works well in that lighting before committing credits to the full clip.
Consent applies here too
Video makes a swap more convincing, which raises the stakes on whose face is being used. Use your own face, or a face you have explicit permission to use. Placing a real person into sexual content without their consent is illegal in the US, UK, EU, and Australia, and is prohibited on SwapX regardless of jurisdiction. It scales with clip length and resolution. A short social-length clip usually finishes in a few minutes; a photo swap returns in seconds by comparison.
Why does my swapped video flicker?
Because each frame was swapped independently, so small per-frame differences became visible motion. Temporal smoothing compares neighbouring frames and stabilises the output.
What formats can I use?
Standard phone video formats such as MP4 and MOV. Trim the clip to what you need before swapping — it renders faster and costs fewer credits.
Can I swap two people in the same clip?
Faces are detected automatically and you pick which one to replace, so swapping several people means running the process once per face.
Will the audio be affected?
